They date from 1783 and were initially scarce meters to the east. At the suggestion of Jorge Gamboa de Vasconcelos, they were, in the early 1950s, taken down and rebuilt in their current location. It is a construction with three arches of stone, having the center one some baroque elements, the coat of arms of Portugal and of the Municipality of Ponta Delgada.
Through these doors passed several personalities, kings and presidents of the Republic, as Dom Pedro I of Brazil (1831); King Carlos and Queen Amelia (1901); the Princes of Monaco, Alberto I (1904) and Alberto II (2004); the kings of Spain, Juan Carlos and Sofia (2005); Presidents of the Portuguese Republic, Craveiro Lopes, Américo Thomaz, Mário Soares and Cavaco Silva. In 2006, the City Council of Ponta Delgada offered a full-size replica of the Gates to the city of Fall River, Massachusetts, United States of America, when Berta de Almeida Melo Cabral was the Mayor. It is considered a property of public interest by a Decree from 1953.
